What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache.

How I got started...

One day, a friend posted in his LiveJournal about his boss placing a geocache. He was quite amused by all the techies with their GPS units scouring the area. I had no idea what he was talking about so I did a Google search for geocaching, and I came up Geocaching.com.

It looked interesting, and I found a cache in a park close to my house, that seemed like it might be easy to find. I set off without a GPS or even a print out of the page and went looking for the cache. Obviously, I didn't find it.

I drug John out with me and we still didn't find it. We went out one more time, and I was starting to get frustrated. I knew I couldn't do any caching without a GPS unit, so I decided I'd have to do some research and pick one up. I didn't have to. John bought me one for my birthday. He gave it to me early, so we could go out and find that cache that had eluded us. We finally found it, and I was really able to get into it that month. Since then it's died down a bit, but I'm back in the mode, and I'd like to go find some caches!
